While society is making strides, mental illness is still taboo, and Riverdale star Lili Reinhart would like that to change.
The 21-year-old opened up about her own struggles with depression and the stigma associated in a new interview with Teen Vogue.
“It’s always been something that I’m so able and willing to talk about, that it’s kind of foreign to me that people hide their depression and anxiety,” Reinhart told the magazine in a feature published Wednesday, Oct. 4.
“The fact that so many people respond to me talking about [mental health] feels a little strange in a way. It’s something that’s normal, and should be talked about on a daily basis.”
The actress went on to say it surprised her how little people open up about an illness that afflicts an estimated 350 million people worldwide.
“I don’t think I’m doing anything particularly miraculous by talking about it,” said Reinhart, who has also opened up on the topic with Cosmopolitan and W Magazine.
“But, talking about it has shown me just how much we do need to be talking about it on a regular basis, and in schools, and in our families.
There is some sort of stigma that still exists today where talking about mental health and mental illness is wrong.”
Interestingly, Reinhart’s Betty Cooper could also benefit from someone in her life taking note, reaching out, and telling her it’s okay to address her mental health issues.
In Riverdale Season 1, Betty earned the nickname “Dark Betty” when she dressed up in a black wig, skirt, and bra to humiliate Chuck in the spa.
“It’s more than just a black wig. It’s Betty’s internal darkness coming to light,” Reinhart shared.
“Her internal struggles and her anxieties and her demons are coming out, as much as she tries on a daily basis to push them down and ignore them — which is something she does through digging her nails in her hands.
It’s kind of like a distraction, and obviously a bad self-harming habit to kind of force her demons away. It’s something that inevitably you can’t push away forever.”
Reinhart and the rest of the cast are currently gearing up for the premiere of Riverdale Season 2. Catch it on The CW on October 11.
