Paul McCartney was one of many celebrities who attended the March For Our Lives rally on Saturday, March 24, but for some, his involvement was especially powerful. While the NYC event supported the Parkland school shooting survivors, the former Beatles band member told CNN he had another special reason to be there:
“One of my best friends was killed in gun violence right around here, so it’s important to me.”
While McCartney did not mention his late friend, John Lennon, by name, his bandmate was shot in NYC in 1980 by gunman Mark David Chapman.
Lennon’s wife, Yoko Ono, has not spoken out on the Parkland shooting, but she did post a message of support for “the youth of America” via Instagram on March 7.
“When we were young we said we cannot trust anyone over 30, and now it’s you, the youth of America,” she wrote. “I invite you to give us your brain power. We need you. Kids power!”
In total, over 800 March For Our Lives events took place over the weekend.
