Mariah Carey Opens Up About Her Secret Battle With Bipolar II Disorder

Mariah Carey is finally setting herself free.

In a new interview with PeopleMariah Carey dropped a bombshell revelation about her secret battle with bipolar II disorder. The Grammy-winning singer was diagnosed in 2001 after she was hospitalized for a mental and physical breakdown.

“I didn’t want to believe it,” Carey explained. She kept the diagnosis a secret for almost two decades, but sought treatment recently after enduring years of professional upheaval and relentless romantic drama.

“I lived in denial and isolation and in constant fear someone would expose me,” stated Carey. “It was too heavy a burden to carry and I simply couldn’t do that anymore. I sought and received treatment, I put positive people around me and I got back to doing what I love — writing songs and making music.”

For years, Carey thought she was suffering from a severe sleep disorder and lived in constant fear of letting people down. After her diagnosis, the pop star finally gained a better understanding of the depression, hypomania, and mood swings she was experiencing. Carey is currently in therapy and taking medication to manage her bipolar II disorder.

“I’m just in a really good place right now, where I’m comfortable discussing my struggles with bipolar II disorder,” she told People. “I’m hopeful we can get to a place where the stigma is lifted from people going through anything alone. It can be incredibly isolating. It does not have to define you and I refuse to allow it to define me or control me.”
