Jessica Lange’s Return To ‘American Horror Story’ Looks Like Everything Fans Have Waited For

Lange’s legendary ‘Murder House’ character, Constance Langdon, is at it again — and we have pictures.

Hide your knives and make peace with any disturbed spirits that inhabit your home because Jessica Lange’s return to American Horror Story: Apocalypse is almost upon us. It’s Lange’s first appearance on American Horror Story since Season 4’s Freak Show, which marks the first time she’ll reprise a role in the series. Not just any role, mind you, but a crucial one — she’s coming back as Constance Langdon, Murder House’s gothic Southern belle and murderess next door.

Thanks to AHS creator Ryan Murphy, we know she hasn’t changed a bit. On Wednesday, Sept. 19, Murphy posted a behind-the-scenes photo of Lange on set with his muse, Sarah Paulson. In the snapshot, Lange is rocking Constance’s signature coif and has a pair of gardening gloves on (fortunately, no shears).

“To celebrate 300 k followers here’s a first look at the return of Queen Constance…the one and only Lady Lange,” the Pose creator wrote, “being directed by that dynamo of wit and talent Sarah Paulson. Love them both!”

Predictably, fans are psyched.

In case you’re thinking, “Of all her characters, why Constance?”, remember: There wouldn’t be an AHS: Apocalypse without her. Literally.

Way back in Season 1, before fans knew what it would become, viewers were introduced to Constance Langdon. Brilliant, devilish, and unpredictable, Constance was basically the worst neighbor imaginable. She was a retired actress and full-time troublemaker — er, homemaker — who didn’t feel the need to warn the Harmon family about the death and decay that would consume their home. Constance was the only member of the season to make it out alive — she and her newborn antichrist grandson, Michael. You know, the one that her son, Tate, had with Vivien Harmon? The one who’s all grown up and bringing devastation to the planet in AHS: Apocalypse. This is gonna be so good, you guys.

Constance isn’t the only character from AHS: Murder House that will appear on AHS: Apocalypse. Far from it, in fact. Actors Dylan McDermott and Connie Britton are returning as the doomed Harmons for one episode, and AHS frequent flyer Taissa Farmiga will reprise the role of their daughter, Violet. Fellow AHS constant Evan Peters will appear as the creepy-meets-endearing Tate Langdon — oh, and these people are all ghosts now, BTW — and you already know Michael’s back (not as a blood-smeared toddler, either).

Lange is endlessly fabulous, and each of her characters is memorable. Plus, it’s invigorating for fans to have her back after a (relatively bleak) few seasons of AHS without her. There’s something special about her returning to the show as the first character she brought to life — pun intended.

As Hollywood Treatment previously reported, Paulson will direct episode six of Apocalypse, which will feature many Murder House icons. While we may only get Lange back for one episode, it doesn’t matter how much screen time she gets. It just feels so right — and significant — to have her back on the show.

Whether this means she’ll continue working with Murphy for future seasons of American Horror Story is unclear. The most fans can do is cross their fingers and hope Lange has a great return. Let’s also cross our fingers that Murphy keeps Constance alive. If there’s any truth to the rumour that she’s a full-on witch, à la AHS: Coven, that would be pretty cool, too.
